Excitement rent the air in Kisii town as students from Kisii University and Kisii National Polytechnic joined residents of Nyamache sub-county to erect a billboard in honour of decorated athlete Hellen Obiri.
The residents, armed with drums, horns, flutes and twigs sang songs of praise dedicated to Obiri following her outstanding performance at the Paris Olympics, saying she had done the region and the country proud.
They thanked the county government for permitting the erection of the billboard at Daraja Moja junction, the entrance to Kisii from Keroka.
They said that the billboard will stand as a beacon of encouragement and hope for upcoming athletes from the region.
“Let this billboard be a reminder of all our young people that there is a lot of potential in them in education, sports and many other numerous fields,” said Dr. David Oyaro, a resident.
He appealed to the community to also consider erecting more billboards to honour other great sportsmen and women such as the late Nyantika Maiyoro, Charles Asati, Natal Temu and Mary Moraa.
“We want Kisii town.to shine like Eldoret which has always honoured its sports champions and keeps on inspiring upcoming ones,” said Janet Moraa, another resident.
