In light of the dons’ strike in public universities, it is imperative that the university and students take a decisive action to stay engaged, productive and focussed on their academic and personal growth.
First and foremost, universities must provide alternative learning platforms. Universities can engage students through online platforms such as e-learning, zoom, googlemeet and online lectures to avoid wastage of time. This is essential in knowledge expansion and learning new skills through other digital materials that can help students engage with their coursework.
Secondly, peer learning can promote exchange of knowledge and ideas where course-mates come together in groups and share ideas. This can help students go through content comprehensively. It also encourages collaboration, sharing of resources and knowledge.
Furthermore, self-study and time management can preoccupy students at individual level. Students can create their schedules to guide them in personal studies through reading books, going through past papers, working on personal assignments or projects, and doing research to help them remain engaged to their courses. Lecturers can also promote this activity by sending assignments or reading materials to students through their group page such as Whatsapp and telegram.

In addition, there is need to upskill and explore new interests. Students can use this time to delve into other skills including writing, language development, and computer literacy skills. Through this students might gain a lot hence keeping them focussed and deters them from idle activities such as drug abuse.
Moreover, career development should be facilitated. Institutions should offer career workshops and networking opportunities. Provision of career and professional skills keeps students aware and motivated to focus on future goals.
Lastly, students must focus on their mental and physical health. Engaging in physical activities like running, walking, jogging or online fitness classes is essential. Universities should provide mental health resources and counselling services to help students manage stress.
Implementing these measures comprehensively will turn dons’ strike into opportunity for personal development, learning and growth.
