Stop child labor, West Pokot Governor warns parents

Parents have been urged to stop engaging their children in child labor but rather send them to school since the county is working to ensure smooth learning in all Early Childhood Development Education (ECDE) centres.

Speaking during the distribution of teaching and learning materials, West Pokot Governor, Hon. Simon Kachapin, said every child deserves a right to education, thus it is vital to prioritize their education.

He warned that it was unlawful for parents to fail to enroll their children in school and instead subject them to child labor, which included herding and babysitting, among others, hence warning of stern action.

Kachapin urged parents to take advantage of learning opportunities since it was one of his major tasks to ensure that all learners attend school, especially after reaching the school-going age.

He noted that a good foundation of learning at the elementary stages of learning ensures a smooth transition to other levels of education.

While thanking the government’s efforts for introducing and developing the competency-based curriculum, the governor said that the county was in full support of the system and had introduced many supportive programs to complement the efforts.
