Kenyan universities have been asked to introduce mandatory entrepreneurship courses to make sure all students have knowledge of how to start businesses of their own after completion of their programmes.

Rosemary Kirika, Kiambu county Deputy Governor, speaking during the graduation ceremony of 100 beneficiaries of Rose Kirika Foudation (RKF) from Jomo Kenyatta University of Agriculture and Technology (JKUAT), said that universities should take up the initiative to impart knowledge on how to generate smart business ideas and how to start and grow a business.

The graduates, drawn from Gatundu North sub-county, were sponsored by RKF to study entrepreneurship, partnering with the International Labour Organisation (ILO).

She said that the foundation chose to work with JKUAT ILO certified trainers because their curriculum addresses the needs of aspiring entrepreneurs at their level without discrimination.

“This is especially relevant to the youth and women who do not have access to formal business education,” she said.

Kirika said that the Foundation’s mission is to empower individuals by helping them discover their talents and turn them into sustainable businesses.

“We are teaching our people how to have business ideas and where the ideas come from so that one can empower and fend for themselves rather than waiting to be employed,” she said.
