Stage set for epic finals in the secondary schools Term One games

After days of thrilling action, finalists will put their best foot forward in a bid to end the competition on a high when curtains fall on this year’s Kenya Secondary Schools Sports Association (KSSSA) National Term One games at Machakos School.

Having earned their tickets to the Federation of East Africa Secondary Schools Sports Association (FEASSSA) games, finalists will be out to crown it with trophies. Fireworks are also expected in the play-offs for a podium finish which will see them secure the remaining tickets to FEASSSA games set for August in Mbale, Uganda.

Butula Boys High School, Butere Girls and Musingu Boys from Western region, Hospital Hill from Nairobi and Nyamira Girls High School from Nyanza will be out to defend their titles.

On the other hand, St Anthony’s Kitale from Rift Valley, Dr Aggrey Boys High School from Coast, Buruburu Girls from Nairobi, St Luke’s Kimilili and Moi Girls High School Kamusinga from Western will be looking to reclaim their lost glory.

Rugby action as the Term One games draw to a close.

The hockey and rugby 15s finals will be repeats of last year’s finals. Defending champions Butula will square it out with All Saints Embu who they beat in last year’s final to lift the trophy. Butula coach Shimenpga Livondo said that they will give their best in the match to fulfill the promise they made to their supporters.

“We will play this match for our fans because they have walked this journey with us. We are determined to retain the title because they trusted us to get the job done,” Livondo said.

He added that they don’t expect an easy encounter but he believes that his boys are equal to the task.

“All Saints are a very good side and I don’t expect them to let us have our way but we will not relent,” he said.

Agoro Sare’s Akech Chol (left) and Gift Fidel of Dagoretti High School fight for glory as the KSSSA Term One games reach the business end.

His All Saints equal Benson Mwenda said that his boys are eager to improve on last year’s second place finish.

“Winning the title is the only clear indicator that we have improved; we finished second last year and the boys have vowed to settle for nothing but the crown,” Mwenda said.

There will be no love lost when defending champions Musingu battle it out with seven-time winners St Anthony’s in the boys hockey final. St Anthony’s are keen to recapture the title they lost to Musingu last year. Musingu on the other hand will be out to prove that last year’s victory was not a fluke.

Agoro Sare have a date with destiny as they look to win their maiden title and also ensure the title returns to Nyanza after a 10-year wait. Maseno School was the last team from the region to win the gong in 2015 and Agoro are hoping to take the title to Homa Bay.

Dr Aggrey will definitely be out for revenge after their half-a-basket loss, but know that they will need to improve to secure their second title after their maiden crown in 2022.

The Taita Taveta County side forced overtime against holders Laiser Hill before they triumphed 65-58 to qualify for their second final. With the top three sides qualifying for the East Africa Secondary School Games, the play-off between Laiser Hill and Dagoretti will be closely contested.

The girls’ final is also a repeat of a preliminary clash with Buruburu looking to secure a double against Butere. Buru saw off Butere 33-27 on Wednesday, and another win today will hand them their fourth title.
