A sombre mood has engulfed Masinde Muliro University of Science and Technology (MMUST) following the death of a second year student who drowned in River Isiukhu on Sunday, January 19.
The deceased, Simon Mogendi (pictured below) hails from Kisii County and was a third year student pursuing Bachelor’s degree in Education Arts, History and Kiswahili.
The body was retrieved yesterday and taken to Kakamega mortuary for examination and preservation.

Mogendi went to swim on Sunday January 19 in River Isiukhu near Kakamega town accompanied by his two friends from the university.
Unfortunately, was overwhelmed by the deep water and drowned.
The body was retrieved by divers from Red Cross and county government as well as local divers.
According to the witnesses, the late Mogendi told his two friends to take a picture of him before he started swimming.
The elders of the area had previously cursed the place where he drowned.
They mentioned the story of an elephant having died at that particular place some years ago and thus declared it a dangerous place.
