Residents of Kwa Matinga in Kathiani sub county, Machakos county are grieving the death of a Grade 4 school girl who committed suicide yesterday.
The girl, 9, was a pupil at Kalikya Primary School.
According to area Assistant Chief, David Ngunzu, the girl had complained of having caught a cold in the morning before being allowed to miss school.
“The girl is diabetic and so when she complained of cold and a blocked nose the mother gave her medicine and allowed to take the day off from school,” he said.
Ngunzu explained that in the afternoon, the girl took a jerrican and rope to go fetch water at a nearby dam.
Unfortunately, her body was discovered hanging from a tree on the roadside near the dam.
“Her body was hanging from a tree by the roadside. The mother is devastated because she doesn’t know what led her firstborn child to take her own life,” he said.
The girl’s body has been moved to Machakos Level Five Hospital mortuary as investigations commence.
