Numerous teachers are discovering that they owe KRA arrears amounting to thousands of shillings. Several teachers reached out to Education News, expressing their frustration regarding their P9 statements in their Tpay accounts, which revealed unsettling arrears for the Financial Year 2024/2025.
“Every month, Pay As You Earn (PAYE) has been deducted from my payslip. What is this now, and how will I manage to pay KRA KSh 23,242 in arrears?” questioned one agitated teacher from Nambale Sub-county in Busia County.
News of these unexpected arrears spread rapidly among teachers nationwide. They informed each other through social media platforms, and by yesterday evening, some Kenya National Union Teachers (KNUT) branches had begun addressing the growing anxiety among their members.
“It’s true that our branch has received complaints from disgruntled members. We will address the issue once we discuss it with the employer,” responded one branch chair from the Nyanza region.

KRA imposing arrears on teachers is not unprecedented. Two years ago, teachers sought intervention from their unions after discovering they owed KRA millions of shillings.
It remains unclear how these arrears accumulated, especially since the same teachers had filed their taxes within the required timeframe.
A month ago, TSC released a circular advising teachers to file their taxes promptly to avoid the last-minute rush that sometimes results in penalties. In the latest developments, teachers report having arrears ranging from KSh 9,000 to KSh 50,000.
It is advisable for teachers to urgently access their Tpay and review their P9 statements to determine their arrears status in a timely manner, as this will help them take necessary steps before the deadline.
