Villagers mill outside Teclar's home in Iviani, Matungulu sub-county.

Shock has engulfed Iviani village in Matungulu sub-county, Machakos, after a 13-year-old schoolgirl allegedly ended her life after an argument with her mother.

The body of the Grade 7 student, identified as Teclar Munyiva, was found dangling from a tree near their home by her mother.

According to a family member, the mother left for work on Monday morning and came back some hours later to take a bath.

“While taking water to the bathroom she stumbled on the body of her daughter, at first she didn’t know the girl was dead because she was in a kneeling position and the mother had not seen the noose,” he said.

“On approaching her, she realized the girl was dead and raised alarm. It is not clear why the girl took her life but there are reports that she had argued with her mother prior to this incident but the details are unclear,” he added.

The body of the girl has been moved to Kangundo Level 4 Hospital mortuary awaiting post-mortem.

Following the unfortunate incident, parents have been urged to be close and talk with their children to sort underlying issues and avert such incidents.

Speaking to Education News via phone, Machakos County Police Commander, Patrick Lobolia said that detectives from the sub-county are investigating the incident and will also record statements from her parents and neighbors.

“Detectives from Matungulu sub-county have launched investigations to establish what exactly happened and whether it was a suicide or a murder,” the police boss said.
