Sharp differences in KUPPET over recent constitutional changes

Members of Kenya Union of Post Primary Education Teachers (KUPPET) in the North Rift have faulted the recently announced change of the union’s constitution.

Led by Joyce Koech, they observed that no consultations were carried out and that the changes are unconstitutional.

Speaking in Kapsabet town, she hit out at top union officials for plotting to extend their stay in office illegally, a move they won’t allow.

“The changes are unacceptable. How can a few people meet and implement such changes without consultations? This is totally unacceptable,” she noted.

Koech maintained the changes would drive members out of the union, further threatening they will move to court to stop the changes.

“Any change must focus on benefitting members and improving the union. The recently announced changes are however targeted to benefit a few officials. We have many able members who can lead the union and those whose retirement period has reached should retire,” added Koech.

Daisy Kirui on her part want the changes shelved, adding that election of union officials must be carried out at the lowest level to allow members participate and make the exercise free and transparent.

“These changes have no room and must be shelved. For elections to be free and transparent and for all members to participate, they must be held at the grassroots level and not national level,” pointed out Kirui.

The members, drawn from various branches in the region, also faulted the requirement for new members to pay KSh200,000 terming the requirement punitive.

KUPPET, during the recent Annual Delegated Conference in Vihiga, announced a change of Union constitution, which would see the age limit for national office holders removed.
