Senior school placement to be based on career pathways, PS Kipsang affirms

Basic Education PS Dr. Belio Kipsang'.

Basic Education Principal Secretary (PS) Belio Kipsang has stated that the placement of JSS learners in Senior secondary schools will be based on career-oriented pathways aligning education with individual strength and career ambition.

Speaking in Nakuru on Monday, Kipsang said that before selecting schools, students will be guided in choosing one of three available career paths; Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics (STEM); Social Sciences and Humanities; or Performing Arts, Music and Athletics.

He noted that each path is designed to cater to different academic and career interests, ensuring that students receive a tailored education that prepares them for higher education and career demands.

Kipsang noted that guidance on selecting career paths will be part of a structured process in schools, intended to help students make informed decisions aligned with their skills and aspirations.

“As part of these changes, students will make their selections based on career interests, after which school choices within those paths will follow,” he said.

The PS also announced that the Ministry of Education will issue additional guidelines on the placement procedure early next year in anticipation of the inaugural Grade 10 beginning in January 2026.

“These guidelines are expected to clarify specific criteria for placement and other logistical details related to implementing the SSS structure,” he said.

Additionally, Kipsang highlighted that the government plans to support the new curriculum by constructing laboratories in all schools.

“These facilities will provide essential resources to enable practical learning, particularly for students pursuing the STEM pathway. The curriculum design for Grade 10 is also underway with relevant educational materials expected to be published to align with the CBC framework,” he added.

The PS noted that the Ministry’s initiative, including the development of targeted career paths and infrastructure support, underlines the government’s commitment to fully implement the CBC system.
