Parents have been reassured Competence Based Curriculum (CBC) textbooks for Grade 5 to Grade 8 will be ready by the end of this month. This is after concerns by Kenyans over the delay in releasing of the textbooks.

During a press conference today, the Chairperson of the Kenya Publishers Association Kiarie Kamau said that schools can continue using the old textbooks until the new ones are out.

On Friday, the Kenya Institute of Curriculum Development (KICD) while announcing the list of all the approved CBC materials revealed that students in grades five to eight will have to wait for the textbooks.

“Books are undergoing corrections at the KICD and will be in the market at the end of January and others in February,” said the chairperson. “Parents and learners are advised to continue using what has been supplied.”

KICD CEO, Charles Ong’ondo.

The delay was as result of recommendations from Kenyans aimed at making CBC better.

Last year, President William Ruto’s government commenced a review of the subjects covered in CBC, reducing the learning areas for lower primary from nine to seven.

In upper primary, the number of learning areas was cut from 10 to eight while in Junior Secondary Schools (JSS), subjects were scaled down from 14 to nine.

Grade 5 books were released in 2020, followed by Grade 6 the following year. Grade 7 books were published in 2023 while Grade 8 materials were released last year.
