School in slums in Baringo celebrates after producing A student

Many students from slums and rentals in Shauri yako, Nubian and Kamelilo villages in Eldama Ravine town, Koibatek sub-county in Baringo beat odds to post impressive results at Kamelilo Mixed Day Secondary School with the top student Elikana Lemuya scoring A-.

Lemuya attributes his success to hardwork and favour from God saying despite huge challenges including lack of fees and even the uniforms that forced the Principal Yatich, teachers and Board of management to intervene to ensure his stay in school.

Speaking at the school, the school Principal Joshua Yatich and Deputy Principal Susan cheruiyot lauded Lemuya saying that the children who trek daily from home have surmounted huge challenges, and they come from villages with biting poverty.

“Most of them don’t have a good place to live.They study and rent houses and, as such, are struggling to keep up with the pace,” he said.

He said that they have managed to send 18 students to university.

The school too has only 17 TSC teachers out of the expected 45 teachers with the board employing 17 PTA teachers for the 860 students which he says nearly all levies are used for paying teachers and no development.

Yatich says with the over with over 90 who sat for KCSE 2024 exiting, over 700 learners are in the school following absence of form one class.
