School in Kisii decries lack of water as population surges

St. Mary’s Nyabiore Secondary School in Kisii County is currently facing an acute water shortage, a situation that might affect the girls’ performance as they prepare to sit KCSE in November this year.

According to the school Principal Donah Change, the students spend a lot of time going to look for water since it is a basic necessity, which affects their studies and concentration in class.

Apart from the water shortage, the principal noted that the institution’s population is ever growing, leading to overstretching of the learning facilities and stress on the learners who scramble for space in the congested classrooms and dormitories.

“Our institution has more than 1,200 students in the boarding section and has led to overstretched facilities and we call for help. The biological nature of girls force them to behave like fish that cannot stay outside water and they have to go out and look for it,” she said.

She appealed to Kisii County Woman Representative Dorice Aburi to visit the school and consider buying a tank to assist them harvest water for use, further appealing to the area MP Obadiah Barong to give it development priority to enable them achieve their goals of academic excellence.

She also appealed for help from well-wishers and the school community to support the institution to grow its facilities.
