Junior Secondary School (JSS) intern teachers in Samburu County have vowed not to go back to school until their employer Teachers Service Commission (TSC) addresses their grievances.
Led by KUPPET Samburu Executive Secretary William Lengoiyap, the teachers narrated that last year they were employed as interns and promised to be absorbed on permanent and pensionable (PnP) terms after one year.
During that period, the commission denied them employment when opportunities came up. They claim that their PnP terms were due in January.
“When January arrived, the government and the commission failed to honour their word and as such, as law abiding citizens, we went to court to challenge the commission’s decision,” said Lengoiyap, addressing the media today in Samburu during the ongoing nationwide JSS protests.
“It is for this reason that we are gathered here today. Moguls have suffered, we are traumatized. We do not understand why a government should pay teachers who have been trusted with a very vital responsibility of national importance as low as Ksh17,000 per month,” he added.
The teachers are demanding that the commission respects court orders and confirms all the interns on PnP terms. They also want it to honour the court verdict and compensate the teachers for the months they have worked illegally as interns, and quash its appeal on the court’s judgement.
“TSC is demeaning itself by appealing a case against the interns. We want to send a message to all moguls that failure to meet these demands, we are not reporting to school,” said Lengoiyap.
