Rongo University came alive on Thursday as students, faculty, and staff members gathered to celebrate Mazingira Day, an event dedicated to promoting environmental conservation.

Students from diverse backgrounds engaged in various activities, including tree planting and other eco-friendly initiatives, highlighting their commitment to preserving the planet for future generations.

Among the most active participants were the Scouts Club and the Writers Club, both of which played crucial roles in organizing the day’s activities. Their enthusiasm was infectious as they rallied fellow students to contribute to the cause.

As students arrived at the designated planting site, they were greeted by a sea of green saplings of various species lined up, ready to be planted at the university’s grounds.

The atmosphere was filled with excitement and camaraderie, as groups of students collaborated, sharing tools and ideas to ensure the trees would thrive.

“Today is not just about planting trees; it’s about planting hope,” said Sarah Mwangi, a member of the Writers Club. Her words resonated with many, encapsulating the spirit of the day.

The event was also graced by several lecturers and heads of departments, who lent their support and expertise. Dr. Nicholas, a renowned Environmental Science Professor, emphasized the importance of such initiatives.

“Mazingira Day is a reminder of our responsibility towards nature. Each tree we plant today is a step towards a healthier environment,” he stated.

In addition to tree planting, the event featured workshops focused on sustainability practices. Students learned about composting, waste management, and the importance of biodiversity. These workshops aimed to equip participants with practical skills they could implement in their daily lives.

The hands-on approach of these sessions allowed students to engage actively with the material, making the learning experience both enjoyable and impactful. The enthusiasm of the Scouts Club was particularly noteworthy. They organized various activities, including games and competitions designed to educate participants about environmental conservation.

One game, ‘Eco-Quest’, challenged teams to identify native plant species and understand their ecological roles. This interactive approach not only made learning fun but also fostered a sense of teamwork and collaboration among students.
