Retired former Kenya Primary School Headteachers Association (KEPSHA) Governing Council members have followed in the steps of their secondary school counterparts to form an Association: KEPSHA Retired National Governing Council (NGC) Members Welfare.

The association is geared towards addressing their welfare and other challenges.

It is also meant to offer mentorship to active primary school head teachers and their Junior Secondary School (JSS) counterparts on skills of work to deliver services professionally. The steering committee has already 36 members after launching the lobby group in Mombasa in May this year.

The group is led by former KEPSHA Chairman Nicholus Gadhemia from Nyeri as Chairman  and deputized by William Kigonyo who hails from Kitui County.

The Secretary is Simon Mueti who comes from Meru County and will be assisted in his duties by Judy Owine from Nyanza.

The Treasurer of the group is Phoebe Kitoyi from Kisumu County, to be assisted by Michael Loltol from Samburu County.

The association was formally launched in September this year in Nairobi with unveiling of their Constitution. The event was graced by former KEPSHA Chairman Joseph Karuga, who has since been nominated as the patron.

Speaking to Education News, Gadhemia revealed that the idea behind the association is to ensure that members age gracefully and with dignity.

“We have noted with great concern that retired teachers suffer in silence and lack information on viable investment options when they are out of service.  We want to not only unite and build solidarity among such retirees, but also give them hope as they go about their lives,” said Gadhemia.

The lobby is set to open an office in Nairobi soon for purposes of managing its affairs at a central point.

“We invite all retired head teachers including primary school teachers who have left service to join this association,” added Gadhemia.

As per its constitution, the objectives of the association is to bring together all willing retired KEPSHA national governing council (NGC) members in sharing life experiences for posterity/prosperity and Sustainability- Sharing knowledge, experiences on how they can age gracefully.

Other objectives include providing a support system to its members in times of need, having group meetings, excursions and seminar outings for relaxation and bonding, pulling together resources to invest in health plans and development, and partnering with other like-minded organizations and welfare groups.
