Residents living around the Kisii Children’s Rehabilitation Centre have been urged to stop dumping rubbish near the school gate due to the potential danger it poses to children with mental disabilities.
Gladys Nyakundi, the centre’s deputy explained that many of the children are unable to distinguish between good and bad food and could consume anything they find in the garbage.
“When you heap garbage here at the gate, you expose these innocent kids to diseases caused by eating contaminated food,” she said.
Nyakundi called on the National Environment Management Authority (NEMA) to intervene and stop the practice before it worsened.

In her plea, Nyakundi emphasized that children are a special gift from God and urged parents not to neglect children living with disabilities but instead to enrol them in school to acquire skills that will enable them to live well in society.
“I appeal to parents to visit and bring their children to the centre because we assess and place them in suitable programmes within our institution,” she said.
She also highlighted that Kisii Children’s Centre for Rehabilitation offers various courses, including poultry keeping, embroidery, shoe making, welding, and dressmaking.
Nyakundi urged the community to change their negative attitudes toward children with disabilities, as stigma can cause harm to both the children and their families.
