Rapogi decries the acute teacher shortage that has hampered services

Parents ,students and teachers of Rapogi High School during a meeting of Form One parents.

Rapogi High School in Migori County is concerned about the acute teacher shortage that has seriously hampered effective curriculum delivery.

Consequently, they want the Teachers Service Commission (TSC) to come to their rescue by deploying more to help them cope with the challenges they are facing.

Currently there are only 64 teachers employed by TSC. The rest are temporary staff recruited by the board.

“BoM teachers are 42. The shortage is 70 teachers against the CBE,” said Senior Principal Erastus Nyagwa.

Led by Board of Management (BoM) Secretary, who is also the PTA chairman Gilchrist Okuom, the parents said the shortage was affecting their academic programmes because they have to devise ways to make sure the syllabus is covered in time.

Nyagwa thanked the parents for their moral, material and enduring support to make the school succeed in its management. Parents agreed to support the teachers materially to deliver on their set targets by complementing their work where possible.

With a student population of over 3,000, they are forced to hire more BoM teachers to support the efforts of the TSC teachers.

Okuom, former Kisumu County Agriculture CECM, thanked and asked parents to support the school by honouring their consensus to offset school fees balances promptly to enable the school run uninterrupted.

He spoke during a PTA meeting for Form One at the school on Friday.

Over the years, Rapogi has been doing well in national exams despite the teacher shortage.

The parents lauded the efforts of the school management to work in unity and harmony, with each of the departmental heads playing their part harmoniously.

Parents also appealed for support from the county government and development partners to assist where they can to help improve infrastructure.
