There is promise of better transparency and accountability following opposition leader Raila Odinga’s vow that he will mobilise Kenyans to fight for full release of funding to schools, colleges and universities.
The Azimio la Umoja leader’s 2024 New Year message dwelt more on education issues, unlike in the past when heavy taxes and the rising cost of living were dominant.
Odinga questioned the whereabouts of the unrealised millions of shilling allocated to free primary education, saying the coalition will seek audience with the education minister Ezekiel Machogu to get answers.
“We will be seeking audience with the education ministry on the whereabouts of half of the capitation money because we believe some of this is going to fictitious schools created specifically for embezzlement purpose,” said Odinga.
Vowing that the opposition will not leave the government to gamble with the education of young Kenyans, he said he had launched major campaigns to involve legislators to push for the full release of funds allocated to schools, colleges and universities.
Odinga wants the ministry of education to operate in an accountable system to ensure that education funds are not siphoned into pockets of corrupt officers.
