Public Health Principal Secretary (PS) Mary Muthoni addresses Machakos residents.

Public Health Principal Secretary (PS) Mary Muthoni on Tuesday led students at Kenya Medical Training College (KMTC) Manza Campus and the public to mark the Global Handwashing Day in Machakos.

Celebrated annually on October 15, Global Handwashing Day is a worldwide advocacy initiative aimed at raising awareness about the importance of handwashing as a simple, cost-effective method of preventing diseases, outbreaks, and pandemics.

PS Muthoni reminded residents of the importance of handwashing, which she said has the potential to reduce communicable and non-communicable disease infections by 50%.

“It is important to clean our hands because data shows that most of the minor ailments at the household level emanate from dirty hands and a dirty environment,” she said.

She noted that 107,000 Community Health Promoters spread across the country were at the forefront in educating the public about health issues.
