Higher Education and Research PS Dr Beatrice Inyangala.

The Principal Secretary (PS) for University Education and Research Dr Beatrice Inyangala has asked councils of public universities to ensure the institutions deliver quality higher education to its students.

Dr Inyangala made the remarks when she met chairpersons of councils of public universities in her Jogoo House office yesterday.

The chairpersons were led by the chairman of the Machakos University Council Dr Christopher Gatama Gakahu.

The PS said that the councils should exercise their oversight role with firmness and tact to ensure effective and efficient implementation of the curricular and other programmes at the universities.

The leaders of the councils resolved to develop a framework that will enable them to address problems that affect the resilience universities require to provide quality higher education to students.

In attendance included the chairman of the University of Nairobi Council Prof Amukowa Anangwe, his Kenyatta University and Maasai Mara University counterparts Ben Chumo and Dr Kennedy Ole Kerei respectively, and Dr Virginia Kimani, the chairperson of Alupe University, among others.

Under the Universities Act, the council of universities set broad policy directions for their respective institutions and track their execution by management.

The council is responsible, as the reporting agency to the government, for the approval of the budget and the performance contract.
