Proposal to consolidate all education bursaries into one faces rejection from some MPs

NGCDF committee chairperson and MP for Eldama Ravine Musa Sirma. He is opposed to collapsing all education bursaries into one, pointing to a likelihood of the idea being shot down in Parliament as MPs jostle to retain it as their popularity tool.

The NGCDF Committee has launched a campaign against consolidating all public-funded bursaries into one with the aim of enhancing education financing.

On Thursday, August 22, the committee members initiated a unified response in the midst of ongoing discussions about overlapping responsibilities among public entities that finance education.

The debate became more prominent following a National Assembly caucus that discussed the consolidation of bursary funds to address issues with the newly introduced university funding model.

The committee chairperson and MP for Eldama Ravine Musa Sirma emphasized the fund’s positive impact and urged the public to support its retention.

He highlighted that the NGCDF has played a crucial role in assisting low income families by paying school fees and enhancing vital educational infrastructure nationwide.

“All of us are assembled here to benefit from this crucial kitty, and you can clearly see what the fund is doing in upgrading our learning infrastructure,” said Sirma, who had attended an NGCDF bursary distribution event in Dagoretti North Constituency today.

He described the proposals to eliminate the NGCDF as poorly motivated.

In line with his views, Dagoretti North MP Beatrice Elachi urged parents to contribute by ensuring that fee balances are paid promptly. She highlighted that NGCDF bursaries alone are inadequate to keep students in school.
