Makueni County Kenya Secondary School Heads Association (KESSHA) Chairman Johnstone Ndivo has called upon school principals to be strategic and creative to run the institutions effectively as they work with limited budgets due to lack of Form One class.

Speaking during the Annual General Meeting (AGM) in Makueni Boys High School, he advised school heads to ensure careful planning and making smart decisions so as to ensure smooth learning.

For the first time since 1985, there were no Form One admissions this year after the government phased out 8-4-4 structure in primary schools, transitioning to the Competence Based Curriculum.

“We should prepare fully knowing that there are so many activities awaiting us including school games, drama festivals and KCSE exams among others. So let us be bold enough to deliver accordingly,” Ndivo said.

He thanked the government for releasing part of the school capitation funds which had delayed for a long time adding that it will ease some of the challenges faced by the schools.

Learning institutions will no longer get the usual funding allocated for Form One students, estimated at Sh22,244 a learner, as part of the Free Day Secondary Education programme.

Last year, Basic Education Principal Secretary Belio Kipsang’ warned school principals against taking part in illegal transfers of learners to fill their schools.
