Nyandarua County’s secondary school principals have asked the government to hasten the disbursement of capitation grants to schools to enable them to operate efficiently and effectively.

Speaking during their County KESSHA Annual Conference (2024) held at Reef Hotel in Mombasa, the principals decried the delay in release of the capitation as having impacted negatively projects in their schools.

Led by their chairman Peter Maina, the principals further revealed that most development projects have stalled due to lack of funds.

“The capitation grants sent to schools usually reach our schools late,” noted Maina, urging the government to allocate adequate funds to infrastructure projects to enable them to implement the new Competency-Based Curriculum (CBC).

Maina said teacher shortage in the region is a serious concern as it has affected teaching and learning.

“The county at least requires 600 TSC teachers to end understaffing,” he said, assuring parents that they will continue working as a team in a bid to post impressive results in the 2024 KCSE despite the challenges.

County Director of Education (CDE) Philip Wambua, while opening the conference officially, advised principals in the region to prepare for the CBC early enough to enable them to operate effectively, reminding them that they have only one and a half years before they receive the first batch of CBC.

“You should also ensure that Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics (STEM) are also fully implemented in your schools,” Wambua said.

The CDE encouraged the principals in the region to strictly adhere to procurement procedures when it comes to purchasing school items, further advising them to keep proper financial records since they are the accounting officers at the school level.
