Adolescent girls in primary schools and Junior Secondary Schools (JSS) from Homa Bay County have a reason to smile after the County Woman Representative Dr Joyce Osogo in partnership with the National Government procured a total of 8, 000 bales of sanitary pads for use.
Osogo, while speaking during the launch of the programme ahead of the dispatch of each sub-county’s consignment for distribution to schools on Thursday, May 23 at her office, said that the students across the eight constituencies in the county will receive the pads free of charge in bid to improve the academic performance of the girls.
“Some girls from financially challenged families fail to go to school during menstruation period for lack of pads. This project is going to solve the problem and improve their academic performance,” Dr Osogo said.

Osogo said the programme will also reduce teen pregnancies in the county which over the years have been increasing rapidly as the girls are easily lured by perpetrators into engaging in sexual relations in order to buy them the sanitary pads.
“This programme is also going to cushion our girls from sex pests,” Osogo said.
According to the latest Kenya Health and Demographic Survey, teen pregnancies rate in Bay County stands at 23.2per cent.
