Pressure mounts on both levels of government to increase the amount of money allocated towards bursaries.

University students in the North Rift say the move will see more students benefiting from the bursaries, unlike the case now.

Led by Mercy Maina, they lamented that the amount has remained low over the years, a move that has affected learning.

“The amount allocated to bursaries has remained low over the years. This has affected learning hence we want this situation addressed,” said Maina.

Speaking at Kipchoge Stadium in Nandi County, she told the county to increase the amount to KSh 200 million, since the current KSh120 million is insufficient.

Maina observed that many students in the country rely on bursaries, urging county assemblies to push for the increase.

“Bursaries are important, and many students rely on them. We hereby want to ask county assemblies to push for an increase of the money so that many students can benefit,” added Maina.

Clementine Wanjiru, while maintaining that no student should miss education whatsoever, also demanded that the vetting and disbursement of the funds should be above board.

“Education is a basic right, and no student should miss it whatsoever. We also demand that vetting and disbursement of bursaries be carried out in a fair and transparent manner,” demanded Wanjiru.

The students drawn from various universities, at the same time warned against mismanagement of higher education in the country, stating that such should be prevented by all means.
