The 500 boxes of text books that were meant for JSS in Nyamira but were found abandoned far away in Kaptagat Forest in Elgeiyo Marakwet County.

Police in Keiyo South led by the Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI) are probing circumstances surrounding the abandonment of 500 boxes of government textbooks which were meant to reach Junior Secondary Schools in Nyamira.

According to reports by the National Police Service, the textbooks intended for Nyamira North and South were discovered discarded along the Kaptagat-Kaptarakwa-Marum Road inside Kaptagat Forest today.

“Police in Keiyo South, Elgeyo Marakwet County led by DCI are investigating circumstances under which about 500 boxes of government textbooks for Junior Secondary School belonging to Nyamira North and Nyamira South were abandoned along Kaptagat-Kaptarakwa Road inside Kaptagat Forest today January 20, 2024,” reads the police statement on X (formerly Twitter).

Peter Mulinge, County Police Commandant, while confirming the incident, said the area chief informed authorities of the abandoned books.

He said the scene has been cordoned off and the books moved to the police station for safe custody.

Mulinge assured the public that DCI officers have commenced investigations to bring the perpetrators to book.

The police stated that the preliminary findings indicate a potential hijacking scenario, where the perpetrators seized control of the vehicle transporting the textbooks, and later offloaded the materials and made away with the vehicle.

“Preliminary investigation indicates that the motor vehicle carrying the books might have been hijacked and hijackers offloaded the books and left with the motor vehicle,” said the police.
