Kenyans have expressed their displeasure over the assault of a Multimedia University (MMU) student by police officers during protests at the institution yesterday.

In an amateur footage captured by a colleague seen by Education News, three Police officers are seen battering the student with a club.

They turn him over by his feet. A student is heard shouting “Wachia yeye” as he writhes in pain.

One of the officers later pull out a teargas canister and drop it next to the student’s head, raising questions on the extent of brutality of the officer.

The canister explodes moments later sending shrapnel in the air.

Netizens took to X wondering whether the officer’s intention was to maim the student.

They called for oversight authorities to investigate the matter, demanding justice for the student.

MMU students staged demonstrations yesterday protesting over poor hygiene in hostels and other facilities at the institution.

They also pointed out that the institution lacked a conducive learning environment due to inadequate learning materials, study equipment and internet services.

The students blocked the busy Magadi road from 6:00 am forcing motorists to use alternative routes to get in and out of Ongata Rongai town, leading to a major traffic snarl up.
