Human rights activists in Kajiado County during a march against FGM. 10 people have been arrested for being complicit in subjecting girls to the practice in Meru.

The police in Igembe South Sub-county in Meru County have arrested 10 suspects for allegedly being involved in FGM activities.

Out of the 10, nine are the parents of girls who have undergone the rite while the 10th is the woman who performed the operation.

Meru County Commissioner Jacob Ouma said the seven girls were rescued by the police and children’s services officers from the sub-county and were taken to a rescue centre.

He said they have received intelligence reports that some people are carrying out the illegal activity in the area, warning all national government administrators especially the assistant chiefs and the chiefs against allowing such acts that they will face dire consequences.

Ouma said FGM is against the law and that anyone found carrying it out or allowing such acts to continue will be dealt with as per the law.
