The County Government of Kisumu is in the process of turning its vocational and technical centres into production units as a means of earning incomes for the entities.
Education Chief Officer Bovince Ochieng’ revealed this at Kisumu Rotary, Incubation and Innovation Centre during a cultural day, saying that the VTCs will be used for motor vehicles and uniform production for county staff.
He argued that the move will save the county cash that is used to source such accessories externally, while at the same time create more job opportunities.
The chief officer said they will in the process create linkages with other firms via industrial attachments for various students, and the VTCs will also be used to repair official vehicles and other machines instead of the same being done elsewhere.

Ochieng’ also said the county government was in the process of hiring additional staff in the wake of rising VTC populations.
He said the student population in the VTCs stands at 6000 while the Rotary centre has some 2,300 students.
Ochieng’ said the 28 VTCs, while they are evenly distributed across the county, are encouraged to provide holistic education in order to meet global trends which are skill-based.
He said the county government was also sponsoring at least two students from every Ward at the Marine Training School.
