Parents have threatened to stage demonstrations over blatant corruption at the Department of Registration offices in Nandi County.
Led by Paul Serem, a parent, they expressed frustration protesting against the vice which they said has hampered the issuance of birth certificates which are needed to register their children in various education databases including NEMIS.
“It is our right to get services from the government and this is a non-negotiable right. As parents, we want action taken against these officers, failure to which we will hold weekly demonstrations to the County Commissioner’s office until action is taken,” he said.
Addressing the press, Serem said that parents and guardians have spent thousands of shillings traveling to and from the offices all in vain.
“Officers at the registration office have been demanding bribes from parents. Some parents have been coming here and going back for several months now without receiving their children’s birth certificates,” he said.

Serem lamented that the officers have been demanding up to Ksh1,000 to speed up the processing of the certificates.
According to him, the trend has also led to congestion at the registration offices, which he says disrupts access to other government services.
The parents also protested the shortage of teachers and infrastructure in public schools in the region, further appealing for urgent intervention by relevant departments.
