Parents and Kieni residents are still reeling in shock over the fire incident at Hillside Endarasha Academy in Kieni, Nyeri county that saw 17 pupils lose their lives and left 14 others nursing injuries at Mathari Mission and Nyeri County Referral Hospital.
The distressed parents and guardians, who have since gathered at the school to check on their children’s status and assess the state of affairs, are still taking in the impact of the unfortunate incident.
At the same time, the government and other stakeholders are providing counseling services to both students and their parents.
The fire, which razed down a dormitory last midnight, has been termed by many as one of the most tragic incidents in Kenyan schools with majority of the people now calling for increased security measures in schools.
The dorm reportedly housed 156 boys drawn from Grade 4 to 8.
As at the time of publication, the cause of the fire is still unknown and investigations have gained momentum.
