The Kenya National Parents Association (KNPA) Bomet branch has appealed for urgent government intervention to prevent the looming teachers’ strike set to begin on Monday.
The branch Chairperson Stephen Koskei stressed that the strike is a threat to learning activities and preparations ahead of this year’s national examinations.
“If a strike takes place now, learning activities and KCSE preparations will be affected. The issues raised by teachers are genuine and we want to ask the government to address them,” he noted.
Addressing the press in Bomet town, he also faulted the new University Funding Model claiming it will lock out deserving students and lead to depression among parents.

Koskei claimed public participation was not carried out regarding the funding model, adding that a household’s employment status does not give the true picture of one’s financial status.
“We are opposed to the new funding model not just for the sake of opposing it. Public participation was not carried out. If this would have been done, everyone would have gotten a chance to give their views on what would work best for everyone,” he added.
Under the revised means testing instrument, students seeking financial aid were grouped into five bands depending on the level of income of a student’s household.
