Parents encouraged to give children with disabilities equal opportunities

County Executive for Social Services Francisca Kilonzo and Kwale Woman Rep Fatuma Masito speak in an interview at Mshiu in Lunga-Lunga Sub-county on Sunday.

Kwale Woman Representative Fatuma Masito has urged parents not to hide their children with disabilities or deny them the right to equal education opportunities.

Masito said that PWDs are entitled to the same rights to education and healthcare as everyone else.

She said that concealing children with disabilities is a violation of both the Constitution and fundamental human rights.

“Children with special abilities are human beings too. Educate them just as you would educate any other child,” she said.

Masito stressed that many children with disabilities possess unique talents that can be nurtured through proper education, warning those who hide them of legal consequences as the government prioritizes equal education for all.

Masito said that educating and empowering persons with disabilities not only improve literacy rates but also supports their overall development and self-resilience.

Masito encouraged parents to take pride in having children with disabilities and not to feel ashamed.

“Giving birth to a child with a disability should not hold you back. We acknowledge the difficulties, but it’s important to make time for your own happiness as well,” she said.

County Executive for Social Services and Talent Management Francisca Kilonzo also emphasized the importance of not sidelining children with disabilities.

She urged parents to be open about their children’s disabilities so that they can receive the necessary support and assistance.

She noted that the Kwale government has prioritized persons with disabilities in various initiatives aimed at improving their quality of life and overall well-being.

Kilonzo said the county has hired PWDs in various departments like Finance, Enforcement and several Boards of Management.

Kilonzo also advised persons with disabilities (PWDs) to form companies in order to compete for government tenders.
