Over 60 students in Kericho rushed to hospital after eating contaminated food

Authorities at the hospital have said students are responding well to treatment.

As many as 60 students from Kalyet Secondary School in Kipkelion West Constituency, Kericho County have been hospitalised this morning at Londiani Sub-county Hospital for allegedly eating contaminated food.

The students after eating ‘githeri’–the mixture of maize of beans and maize on Sunday afternoon, some of them started complaining of stomach pains. One of the symptoms was vomiting that persisted overnight. Others complained of the stomach pains.

Some 47 students were the first group rushed to the Londiani Sub-county Hospital today morning including 38 girls and 9 boys.

The authorities at the hospital facility confirmed that most of them are in stable condition after receiving treatment

”We have managed to treat all of them, and all are stable after receiving medications ranging from antibiotics to fluids,” a medical superintendent at the facility told journalists.

”The challenge we have had with handling most of them is space. Our outpatient department is severely over-utilised, especially with these mass incidents, and we would appeal for assistance with the expansion process,” he added.

Food poisoning is a type of foodborne illness – a sickness people get from something they ate or drank caused by germs or other harmful things in the food or beverage. Symptoms include upset stomach, vomiting and diarrhea .
