Some 205 students at Don Bosco Ituuru Boys High School in Gatundu South, Kiambu County, have been sent home after a fire destroyed four dormitories and their possessions.

School principal Paul Thang’wa said that despite the spirited efforts of school workers, neighbors, and the Kiambu County Government firefighters to put out the fire on Monday night, nothing was salvaged.

Speaking at the institution on Tuesday, Thang’wa said the students were sent home as the school management laid down proper procedures to accommodate them back.

The principal noted that the cause of the fire has not yet been established, adding that investigations to unravel the cause of the inferno are in top gear.

“It was a regrettable incident where our students lost their belongings. We have decided to send them home, but we will have board meetings on Wednesday to have them back very soon,” he said.

However, he noted that no injuries or casualties were reported and that all students were accounted for and safe.

“The students were traumatized, and that’s why we have told their parents to come for them. They are, however, safe as no one was injured during the incident. We are, however, cooperating with the authorities to establish the root cause of the fire,” he quipped.

However, he averred that the school would continue focusing on students’ progress and studies, noting that the school is one of the top-performing institutions in the county.

Parents led by Elizabeth Wahu, Nyambura Muiruri, and Mercy Thuku said they were dumbfounded to learn that a section of the school had burned down.

“I received a message from the school at around 10 pm that I should pick up my child following the incident. I was shocked and worried, but I’m glad all students are safe. We hope that all measures are undertaken earnestly so our kids can resume learning,” Wahu said.

The parents called on the school management to implement proper safety measures to deter the recurrence of such incidents.
