Nyeri set to launch youth development policy next week

Nyeri county Governor, Dr. Mutahi Kahiga.

Nyeri county is set to launch the ambitious Nyeri County Youth Development Policy on November 29, 2024 at Moi Nyeri Complex School.

Speaking during a presser, Esther Ndung’u, the CECM for the Department of Gender, Youth, Sports, and Social Services, highlighted the policy’s transformative agenda aimed at addressing the needs of the county’s over 203,000 youth.

She said that the policy seeks to integrate youth issues into all county programmes, policies, and plans, ensuring their voices and concerns are adequately addressed.

Key objectives of the policy include; Empowering youth in socio-economic development, promoting holistic health and access to healthcare; advancing career development and transformative youth empowerment; and mainstreaming youth interventions across all county departments and activities.

Ndung’u added that the policy places special emphasis on priority groups such as youth with disabilities, street youth, those in conflict with the law, and individuals living with HIV/AIDS or other chronic diseases.

She noted that the initiative will make the county the first in the Central Region Economic Bloc (CEREB) to launch such a comprehensive youth policy and the third in Kenya, following Makueni and Kakamega counties.

The minister lauded the collaborative effort that led to the creation of the document, which began in 2021.

“This has been an inclusive and consultative process involving youth organizations, sectoral groups, government agencies, development partners, civil society, and the private sector,” she said.
