Nyeri Governor Mutahi Kahiga and Deputy Governor David Kinaniri officially closed a rigorous one-month firefighters’ training programme held at the Nyeri Town Fire Station. The event marked a milestone in the county’s commitment to enhancing public safety and emergency response capabilities.
A total of 37 firefighters participated in the comprehensive training, which was facilitated by the County Government of Nyeri in collaboration with the International Centre of Technology (ICT) Fire and Rescue based in Thika, Kiambu County. Also in attendance was Esther Ndung’u, the County Executive Committee Member (CECM) for Gender, Youth, Sports, and Social Services, underscoring the county’s multi-departmental approach to community safety.
The training covered an extensive curriculum, including fire attack and foam handling, firefighter survival techniques, fire suppression, vehicle extrication, search and rescue operations, and Emergency Vehicle Operation (EVOC).

The aim was not only to equip firefighters with advanced skills but also to foster a spirit of teamwork, leadership, and community service.
Governor Kahiga lauded the firefighters for their dedication and hard work throughout the training.

“This training is a testament to our commitment to enhancing public safety and empowering our firefighters to serve the community effectively. The skills and certifications gained here will improve service delivery, career progression, and their ability to handle real-life emergencies,” he said.
Deputy Governor Kinaniri echoed these sentiments, emphasizing the importance of continuous professional development in ensuring Nyeri remains prepared for disasters and emergencies.
CECM Esther Ndung’u highlighted the role of such initiatives in building a safer and more resilient community. “The collaboration between the county and ICT Fire and Rescue reflects the importance of public-private partnerships in advancing critical services like fire and rescue operations,” she noted.
The training concluded with a certification ceremony.
