An MP in West Mugirango constituency, Nyamira county, has pledged to offer Ksh5,000 pocket money to all 2023 KCSE candidates who qualified to join university.
Area MP Steve Mogaka said that the NG-CDF office decided to give the funds to assist the students in their finances as they adjust to the new university life.
“We know that most of these students come from poor families and we want to stand with them until they complete their studies,” he said.
The MP, who met area Principals during an education consultative meeting, noted that 5,000 students from his constituency qualified to join the University. He attributed the impressive number to collective efforts from teachers, students, parents and leaders.
“This has encouraged me and let me assure you that I will support you in all ways to sustain this sterling performance,” he said.
The NG-CDF Committee Chairman revealed that 8,000 University students benefitted from more than Ksh50 million in bursaries this year, adding that during the disbursement, they prioritized orphans.
Nyamira South Deputy County Commissioner Florence Onunga asked parents to provide their children with basic learning materials instead of depending on bursaries.
The administrator said that the constituency registered 8,159 students – 3,790 boys and 3,709 girls – joining Form 1 this year.
Onunga expressed fears that around 78 students might not join secondary schools over lack of school fees.
“These are confirmed needy cases in our offices and I appeal to well-wishers to sponsor them,” she said.
