Nyamira official decries alarming rise in child sodomy during holidays

Nyamira County Children’s Officer Bill Adela has raised concerns over the high rate of sodomy among children during the long holiday.

The officer who addressed the public in Nyamira town during closure the 16 active campaign days against Gender Based Violence (GBV), the officer attributed the vice to use of drugs and other intoxicants that destabilize offenders’ minds as they commit the atrocities

He asked parents to be aware of the children’s rights and to protect their children instead of leaving them to suffer quietly. He also mentioned that in most cases, the cruel acts are done to children by close family members the children trust.

“We receive many cases of child defilement and sodomy but I am happy our security officers are always alert to apprehend the law breakers.’ He said. Mr. Adela asked parents to take utmost care of their children because victims of sexual assault end up with long term trauma that dogs them to their adult life.

The officer appealed to teachers to be of help to the children especially during the long holidays by sharing with parents on the best ways they can guide and counsel children while keeping them safe.

Nyamira County Woman Representative who was also present, asked the government to ban night discos because they lure youth into falling victims of abuse.

She said that some groups have emerged in the county that lure the youth with house parties where they indulge in vices like smoking, taking alcohol and other intoxicants which impair their judgment and dilute their ability of thinking constructively.

She appealed to the government to take harsh legal actions against any adults who will be found guilty of defiling the minors. She also appealed to community social workers, churches and Nyumba Kumi groups to strengthen their effort of safeguarding the lives of children and the youth who are the future pillars of the country.
