Over 600 Early Childhood Development in Education (ECDE) teachers in Nyamira County staged a peaceful demonstration on Monday February 3, demanding salary adjustments due to underpayment.
They said that the salary they get is often lower than the recommended levels from the Salaries and Remuneration Commission.
Teachers also expressed frustrations about delays in salary payments and the lack of permanent contracts for many of their colleagues.
Alice Nyamongo, a teacher from Ntana Primary School, shared personal challenges as a result of from financial stress. The teachers called on Governor Amos Nyaribo to address their grievances urgently, noting that their salaries of KSh15,000 a month sharply contrast with renumerations in neighbouring counties.
In November 2024, the Nyamira County Government confirmed 500 teachers as permanent employees after years of contract work.

When Education News sought more details from the Nyamira County Public Board CEO Anne Mwasi on the plight of ECDE teachers, she reiterated the county administration’s commitment to listen to their grievances asking them to embrace dialogue because going to the roads is not a panacea for peaceful coexistence.
Meanwhile, Nyamira Chief Officer for Zipporah Orina has reiterated the County Government’s commitment to assisting its teachers in developing professionally and economically as they continue to nurture pupils.
Speaking at Kebirigo Comprehensive School, where she opened two newly constructed ECDE classrooms, she said that Nyamira administration gives priority to education development, which can only succeed with good infrastructure.

“We want to create an enabling learning environment for both learners and teachers. That is why we are here today to witness the opening of these modern classrooms, she said.
Orina thanked Bonyamatiuta Ward MCA, Julius Matwere, for his support and encouraged other MCAs to follow his lead. Matwere noted that the classrooms were built using funds from his office and praised Governor Nyaribo for his responsiveness.
