In less than a year, Nthangu Mixed Secondary School Principal Munywoki Kavutai has implemented transformative changes that have greatly boosted the school’s performance.
These changes have been embraced by the school community and parents, who now play an active role in key decisions that benefit the students.
Principal Kavutai, speaking to Education Digital, shared that since his return to the school as principal, after previously serving as the deputy head teacher, his academic performance has shown remarkable improvement. The school’s mean grade has risen from 2.73 in KCSE 2023 to 4.02 last year, a promising sign of growth.
“Having worked here before, I knew what needed to be done. With the dedication of our teachers and the support of the parents, we are confident that this year’s promising class will produce many students who will continue to university and tertiary levels,” Kavutai said.
The school has also become a haven for students previously suspended from other schools.

“We take in all kinds of students and trust me, they reform and perform very well here,” the principal said.
This year, six Nthangu Mixed Secondary School students were selected to join the university out of 48 candidates, with the highest score being a B Plain.
Kavutai also mentioned that he had invited examiners to speak with the students and guide them on approaching the national exams, an effort that has paid off.
Embracing the CBC system, the school is also focusing on encouraging students to participate in extracurricular activities. One student progressed to the county level in javelin. Talent pays, and we have to encourage our students in holistic activities,” Kavutai added.
