Mandera Governor Mohamed Adan Khalif has called on more students from Northern Kenya to join the teaching profession to curb the teacher shortage in the region.

Speaking during the second graduation ceremony at Uzima University in Kisumu, Khalif said that the number of students joining the teaching profession is very low because the entry grades for the profession has for a long time been very high.

Khalif said his government is committed to sponsoring students in public universities a across the country to pursue teaching and medical courses.

He said his administration is at the moment sponsoring 15 students at Uzima University through partial scholarships.

The Governor urged counties in Northern Kenya to invest more in the training of primary school teachers.

Khalif further commended faith-based institutions for doing a good job in supplementing government efforts in the provision of education.
