Kenya Certificate of Secondary Education (KCSE) 2024 theory examinations have kicked off today after weeks of practical tests in several subjects, with an assurance by Education Cabinet Secretary (CS) Julius Ogamba that several measures have been put in place to stop examination malpractice.
In this year’s exams, candidates who engage in cheating will be held personally liable, which is a departure from the past when an entire school was punished.
The CS, who was overseeing the distribution of papers at the Kenya National Examinations Council’s (KNEC) container at the Kibra Deputy County Commissioner’s offices, said the government has taken these steps to curb any attempts at malpractices and irregularities.
“The innovative approaches include personalization of the examination papers and securing all mobile phones in an examination centre while an examination is ongoing,” Ogamba stated.

KNEC Chief Executive Officer David Njengere said students have personalized papers and they will not be printing extra papers, being the first time that this happens.
The innovative approaches also include the papers bearing the students’ names and index numbers, which are torn off when they are packed to guard against examiners identifying the candidates while marking.
KNEC will also pack morning and afternoon session papers separately.
Supervisors and invigilators are secondary school teachers, the former being rotated weekly.
A total of 965,501 candidates are registered for this year’s exam in 10,754 centres countrywide, slightly higher than the 903,264 last year.
The exams will run for the next three weeks.
