Next CBA should focus on better salaries, promotions, KNUT tells Govt

The Kenya National Union of Teachers (KNUT) has emphasized that the 2025-2029 Collective Bargaining Agreement (CBA) should focus in addressing teachers’ concern notably better salaries, promotions, and the improved working conditions of teachers in the country.

Speaking during the 64th ADC at Sheikh Zayed Hall in Mombasa on December 10, 2024, the union National Chairman Patrick Karinga noted that teachers in the country have dedicated their careers in serving the nation and it’s the right the be recognized and appreciated.

“Another critical issue on our agenda is the CBA 2025-2029. This agreement is not just a document—it is a promise to our teachers that their hard work and dedication will be recognized and rewarded,” said Karinga.

He further called for proper planning and execution in the transition to Grade 9 in the Comprehensive Schools, emphasizing the need for adequate support for teachers.

“The transition of Grade 9 into comprehensive schools must be handled with utmost care to ensure teachers are not left to navigate the challenges alone,” he said.

Karinga also urged the government to prioritize professional development and establish robust support systems to help teachers thrive within the new education system.

On climate change, Karinga urged educators to take an active role in preparing students to become environmentally conscious citizens by equipping them with the knowledge and skills needed to address and mitigate climate change.

“The impact of climate change is evident in our schools, affecting not only the learning environment but also the well-being of our students,” said Karinga.

The meeting brought together representatives from 110 KNUT branches, along with other dignitaries.

Karinga commended the attendees for their unity, noting that their dedication, resilience, and unwavering commitment to the ideals of KNUT have been instrumental in strengthening the union.

“The unity and dedication displayed by our members are the foundation of our collective strength,” he said.

He reaffirmed the union’s commitment to improving the education system and enhancing the well-being of teachers, despite the numerous challenges they face.
