Maasai Mara University students have elected their fifth president today, who will lead the students’ council.
The event took place at the Maasai Mara Senate boardroom, where 48 delegates voted. David Mwema won the presidency.
According to the chief returning officer Dr Ndungu Kungu and Deputy Chief returning officer Anne Lanoi Keton, an electoral college system borrowed from the United States of America was applied whereby the delegates were elected three per department and in total they were 48, after which the delegates elect the student council.
Secretary General seat was won by Aron Simiyu, Treasury is Lomerikwang M. Jackson, Secretary Academics and Editorial seat went to Franklin Moseti while Abel Simel Kaparo clinched Secretary Entertainment, Sports and Gender seat and Secretary Health, Catering and Special Needs slot is Hope Shiroh.
Mohammed A Adan, the dean of students at Mara University, commended hat the process saying it went on very well, seamlessly, as planned, and the students showed maturity and comradeship by holding peaceful campaigns, respecting each other, and upholding democracy.
Maasai Mara University students need to be emulated and supported in proving and making democracy prevail.
Adan said contestants were only contesting against each other. However, he remained a brother and sister, which came out in today’s elections.
He added that the successful candidates will be sworn in next week and thereafter taken for induction, where they will be trained on their new roles and the expectations of their comrades.

According to Odhiambo Collins Omondi, the chairperson of the Independent Student Electoral Commission (ISEC), the election was free, fair, and transparent.
Delegates casting their vote during election.He said that as ISEC members, they are very grateful to the students of Maasai Mara University for maintaining peace and order throughout the entire election process, as opposed to the previous election, which involved conflicts and chaos and wasn’t fare.
He gave a positive message to the contestants to lead with wisdom and courage and to help maintain peace.
