Nyeri County is buzzing with activities as it hosts the pre 2024 National Primary Schools Athletics Championships at Giakanja Boys Secondary School.
This year marks the 40th edition of the renowned Kenya Primary School Athletics Competition, themed “Nurturing Talents through Values and Competencies for Self-Fulfilment.”
With over 800 students from across the country converging at the venue, the event promises a sensational showcase of talent and sportsmanship.
Organised under the auspices of the Kenya Primary School Sports Association (KPSSA), the competition has attracted participants from all eight regions of Kenya.
The competitions have drawn students from all the 8 regions including Western, Nyanza, Coast, Central, North Eastern, Eastern, Nairobi and Rift Valley.
The games kicked off yesterday and are set to continue for three days, featuring a variety of track and field events alongside cross country races.
Notably, there is a special category for children aged 8-12 known as Kids Athletics, with the Under-12 team gearing up for the challenging 1200-meter cross country race.

Collaborating closely with stakeholders such as KPSSA, the Ministry of Education, KEPSHA, and others, the County Government of Nyeri, through its Departments of Gender, Youth and Sports, and Education and Training, is dedicated to ensuring the success of this national event.
Nyeri Governor Mutahi Kahiga, Deputy Governor David Kinaniri, Regional Director of Education Sabina Aroni, and County Director of Education Jane Njogu, graced the event’s opening ceremony.
