Narok residents demand transparency in bursary distribution

Governor PAtrick Ntutu at a function in Narok. Residents of Angata Barrikoi want transparency in the disbursement of bursaries.

Residents of Angata Barrikoi in Narok County want elaborate measures put in place to ensure transparent disbursement of bursaries in the area.

The residents observed that bursaries are crucial in ensuring education for all, hence none should be locked out.

Led by Alice Bett, they faulted the proposal to change the mode of vetting and disbursement, saying the move will disadvantage many students.

Speaking in the area, she demanded that village elders be involved in the processes since they know all families and the neediest children in their villages.

“We can’t allow the current system to be changed. As residents, we want village elders to be involved in vetting because they know all people in the village well and the neediest cases,” she noted.

Bett urged Governor Patrick ole Ntutu to do follow-up of the bursaries, further warning politicians from other regions against meddling in their affairs.

“Governor Ntutu should do the follow-up of the bursaries to ensure the intended students are the ones benefitting. We have seen people from other areas meddling with our affairs. This is unacceptable and we want them to stop forthwith,” said Bett.

The residents, who also expressed fear of continued interference, however lauded the current system, which they said has seen all students in the area benefit in the past.

Bursary allocations have remained a challenge in the area over the years, with residents blaming some county government officers of bias.
