The Kenya National Union of Teachers (KNUT) Nandi Central branch now wants teachers stationed in primary schools and are qualified to be promoted to Junior Secondary School (JSS).
The branch Executive Secretary Benard Maiyo said that there was no need to have many qualified teachers in primary school and yet JSSs are understaffed.
Speaking while addressing the press, he also demanded that more schools be gazetted as JSSs in line with the Presidential Working Party recommendations.
Maiyo appealed for the intervention of Parliamentary Education Committee Chair Julius Melly to push for the promotions.
He lauded the timeliness by the Teachers Service Commission (TSC) in transferring 17 teachers from Isongo Secondary School in Kakamega where parents stormed and chased the Principal away, stating that teachers’ safety should be prioritized at all times.
“I want to commend TSC for transferring teachers from Isongo Secondary School. Teachers deserve respect and it’s wrong for parents to storm a school and frog-match teachers,” said Maiyo.
